Small apartments have their charm of being aesthetic and cozy, but they are a little short when it comes to kitchen space. Although, no amount of kitchen storage or counter space has ever been enough. So, you don’t need to stress about not being able to figure out how to sort your kitchen out, because we have got a list prepared of how to make your small kitchen a functional one.

1. REPLACE UPPER CABINETS WITH OPEN SHELVES

When having a space constraint, replace upper cabinets with open shelves. Open shelves give easier access to things while providing sufficient space to keep belongings as well. Besides, you can identify the stock up ingredients from a distance.

2. PEGBOARD WILL BE A LOT OF HELP

Once you get a pegboard fixed, you will be surprised at the number of things your wall can hold, pots, pans, cups, canisters, lid hangers, etc. This removes the tension of occupying the open space of your kitchen with cabinets and also gives you flexible storage that can be adjusted with time according to need.

3. TOP CABINETS

While pegboards will help in making a place for a lot of utensils as aforementioned, but you will still need cabinets for glassware like dishes, plates, wine glasses, regular glasses, kids dishes, etc. When you have a cabinet, why not use the top of it as well. If you are thinking, what you will store there, well, the serving platters of special occasions, extra pantry supplies that will not be required recently. If you are worried about the look, you can buy pretty baskets keeping in mind the space available above the cabinet and the space that will be required to store those cutleries.

4. HOOK YOUR TENSION ABOUT THE KITCHEN SPACE TO TENSION RODS AND HOOKS

Tension rod for inside the cabinet and hooks for the outside. If you think you don’t have space to hang a pegboard, use the side of your cabinets to make additional space from the space you already have. Hang everything that can be hung; it frees up the cabinet and the counter space. When you think you do not have enough space in the pantry zone to stack up your daily requirements, adding a tension rod is like adding another row to keep the food jars. You can also turn another cabinet shelf into sort of a tray cabinet by attaching tension rods vertically. They will keep your trays in a filed manner and not take up additional space. Once you feel that the sides and the inside of the cabinets are filled and cannot hold another thing, you can add magnetic strips to make a floating rack of everyday essentials. Hooks can also be added at the bottom of cabinets to add space.

5. TURN THE CABINET SHELVES INTO DRAWERS

Cabinet shelves are of great use, but it makes finding things that are stored in the back difficult. Drawers are quite helpful in this situation. You can see a wide variety of drawers to organize your kitchen here. If you already have a cabinet shelf and want to renovate it, adding baskets will simplify your process of finding things from the buried inside.

6. USE YOUR WINDOW AS STORAGE

You might not think that the window space is good enough to store your kitchen collections, but if you have a small-sized L shaped, or a U shaped, or even a parallel kitchen with a window space, you could use the window seal for storage and add climber plants on the top for enhancing the view. It would be a smart usage of space if used to hang your collection of pots and pans.

7. INCLUDE A FOLDING TABLE

If you don’t think you have enough room to place a table, that’s when you will be happy to use fold-down tables (either from the wall, or hanging from a book-shelf, or the front of a window). It saves you the discomfort of not having a table and prevents it from getting in your way when you don’t need it.

8. ADD SHELF RISERS ON COUNTERTOPS

Some things just cannot be removed from the countertop. Like coffee pods, tea, honey, sugar, salt, etc. But they take space and create clutter. When you use shelf risers, you don’t only add space to your kitchen but increase space on your countertop.

9. HANG A MIRROR

Hang a mirror in your kitchen (preferably opposite the window). The reflection of light will make your kitchen space seem bigger.

If you follow these tips you will increase your kitchen space to at least three times more than what it was before. This will make your small and cozy kitchen completely functional and make you enjoy the time you spend there even more.
