Hughes took up skating when he was three years old. In January 1998, Robin Wagner, who had been choreographing for her since 1994, was named her head coach. Hughes triumphed in the junior division at the U.S. victories during the 1997–98 campaign. She participated in the ISU Junior Grand Prix the following year and took home the silver medal at the Junior Grand Prix Final for the 1998–1999 season. Additionally, in November 1998, she won silver at the 1999 World Junior Championships. In 1999, the U.S. Hughes won the pewter medal in her first senior-level competition.
Normally, Hughes would not have qualified for one of the three American women’s spots at the 1999 World Championships because Naomi Nari Nam, who won the silver medal, did not meet the event’s age requirements, as per ISU regulations.
