Completed between 1905–1908, The Apthorp is a 12-story residential condominium that covers the full block bounded by Broadway, West End Avenue, and West 78th & 79th Streets. Designed by Clinton & Russell for William Waldorf Astor, this Italian Renaissance Revival gem was modeled on the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Its limestone façade, arched double-height porte-cochères, and stately courtyard evoke an elegant European palazzo.
Centered around a lush oval courtyard with fountains, marble benches, and iron-and-glass awnings, The Apthorp offers a serene retreat from city life. Inside, original pre‑war finishes like mosaic floors, carved marble mantels, chandeliers, and oversized windows blend with modernized condos featuring luxe appliances and high ceilings. Its unique architecture and communal garden-like space have made it one of the Upper West Side’s most cherished landmarks.
